ARMED MAN PURSUED

Civilians Assist Police PRAISE FROM MAGISTRATE Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, January 15. The action of three young men who assisted a constable to pursue two men, one of them armed with a loaded revolver, ■’who were suspected of having broken into a warehouse, was warmly commended in the magistrate’s court to-day by Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M. The mon who gave assistance to the police were two brothers, William Frederick Guy and Vernon Neil Guy, and Leslie Walter Piper, while the constable who arrested one man after a long chase was Constable B. Wootton, of Sydenham. The arrested man was Leslie Pearce,' a labourer, aged 30, while his companion was,’ it is alleged, Robert James Mitchell, a labourer, aged 27. “The public of Christchurch and the authorities are under a considerable debt to you and your companion for your enterprise and energy in pursuing two criminals,” said the magistrate to Guy, “and I think it my duty on behalf of the authorities to thank you.” To this witness’s brother, who said he was 20 years of age, the magistrate remarked that what he had said before he repeated with even greater emphasis. Speaking to Piper the magistrate said his remarks applied equally fully. He felt that Piper had shown admirable conduct and merited the approbation of every citizen.
