NAPIER ART GALLERY
A further £3OO is required by the Napier Arts and Crafts Society before the first section of the art gallery and museum to cost £2OOO may be built upon the site of the old Athenaeum. The last-mentioned building is now being demolished by a Hastings company, which bought it for removal at £llO 5/--
The art gallery plans were prepared by Mr. J. A. Louis Hay, who has provided for a completed building 99 feet in length, and 60 feet in width, allowing 10 feet off the present section for future road widening. The main gallery, 50 feet by 30 feet, is the only section contemplated for the time being. The main entrance to the gallery will face Hersehell Street and give access to a large square hall, embellished with statuary and flanked with the general offices and those of the custodian. The main gallery will be on the right of the hall, its lighting system in full accord with modern practice.
Below the building, the architect has made accommodation for exhibits of lesser importance, and a workshop. When the building is complete, it will include a hall 35 feet by 30 feet on the opposite side of the main gallery, and at the rear of the building a long gallery, 60 feet by 15 feet, will be filled with the collection contributed by Lady McLean. All the galleries will be arranged so that the public shall pass from one section to another without any congestion.
