Norman, forwarded a statement to the Petone Borough Council last night setting out the probable expenditure likely to be incurred in the maintenance of the pipe bridges over the Hutt River and Waiwetu Stream. The statement read :— “The Hutt River pipe bridge trusses require reconditioning, and the decks need covering with one inch bitumen paving coat. The estimated cost is £315. The Waiwetu bridge requires redeckiug longitudinally, and the abutments require regrading, and general repairs are also needed. The estimated cost of that would be £2OO. For the first year, therefore, an expenditure of £515 would have to be met for the two bridges' For the following years an amount of £l5O should be s£t aside annually as a fund for repairs and renewals to the bridges. “In view of the facts that so much expenditure has already been incurred by the Wellington City Council, and that the proposed percentages are only for two years, this council considers that the percentages arrived at. by tallies taken in September Inst should stand.” The question is. to be referred to the finance committee. Other Business. Permission was granted the Wellington District Free Ambulance to hold a street day in the borough on Friday, March lu. The police report being favourable, it was decided to renew the billiard saloon licenses of Messrs. Long, Spence and Cotton. The statement that there were holes in the floor of the Pctone baths big enough for people to put their feet in was made by Cr. J. Cumming. The engineer is to investigate the position. It was reported that the attendances were still good. A request from the Petone Cricket Club to have one of the shelters nt present situated on the western side of the Recreation Ground moved to the northern end was referred to the reserves committee with power to act. The fact that a. man and his family of throe young sons were living in a concrete garage at Petone was revealed in the inspector's report, presented at the meeting of the Petone Borough Council last evening. The building was 17 feet by 11 feet, and had very poor light and ventilation. It was stated that the nnau had been warned twice to vacate the premises, but had failed to do so, with the result that action was being taken to enforce the by-law.
