OVERSEAS ATHLETES

Meeting in Wellington on February 23 BRITONS AND FINNS Saturday afternoon, February 23, is the day on which the English aud Finnish athletes who are competing in the Centenary Games will appear in Wellington. Notice to this effect was received by the Wellington Centre of the Amateur Athletic Association, which met last night, Mr. A. C. Kitto presiding. Mr. Kitto said the council of the N.Z.A.A.A. had advised that the team, which comprised four Englishmen and two FinnSj would compete in 16 events in Wellington. The council was putting up £lOO, and was asking the various centres each to guarantee £35. The visiting team would go first to Wanganui, then to the following centres: — Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington, Dunedin, Christchurch, finally sailing from Wellington. The N.Z.A.A.A., Mr. Kitto continued, was to take 25 per cent, of the net profits. Hotel charges were to be the responsibility of the individual centres on this occasion, and not to be charged against the gate, as was done during the visit of the Australian team. He said he took exception to hotel expenses being put on the centres, and advised the secretary of the N.Z.A.A.A. accordingly, "but he did not see the point, and is sending us the terms and conditions,” Mr. Kitto said. It was agreed to approve the date allotted, subject to the terms being satisfactory. Other Fixtures. Permission was granted the Public Service Sports Association to hold the tournament at the Basin Reserve on ■Wednesday, February 6, subject to the rules of the N.Z.A.A.A. A combined old boys’ athletic meeting will be held at Wellington College on January 22. -It was resolved to hold the Jewish Shield meeting at the Hutt on February 2, or if the ground were not available on that date it was decided to have an electric light meeting instead. An electric light meeting on the Basin Reserve on the night of January 26 was granted the Olympic Club. Scratch and handicap night meetings at the Basin Reserve for the remainder of the season will take place on Mondays, January 28, February 4 and February 11.
