OTIRA GORGE ROAD
In Better Order Than For Many Years Motorists who have driven over it during the Christmas holidays say that the road through the Otira Gorge is in better condition than for many years past, says the “Christchurch Times.” Practically every bad place on the road has now been repaired and the new bridge over. McGrath’s Creek is the last urgently required improvement. Fear of the notorious Bealey ford has prevented many motorists bound for the West Coast from driving their cars through the Pass, but a road tally taken between Christmas Day and January 2 shows that 212 cars went by this picturesque route. Many people also went by service car. The Bealey ford was considerably higher at Christmas time than motorists expected, there being five feet of water flowing over it. Au investigation has shown that this depth has been caused by branches and trunks of trees partially damming the river at three points below the ford. It is a mystery how this wood found its way to these points as there are no trees growing in the vicinity of the ford. Steps will be taken to have the obstruction removed, after which the level of the water should fall considerably. .
