AIR LINER’S CRASH
Open Verdict at Inquiry LONGREACH DISASTER Sydney, January 12. An open verdict was returned by the Air Accidents Investigation Committee which inquired into the disaster near Longreaeh on November 15 when a new Qantas Empire Airways liner crashed, killing four occupants. “Although there are a ntnnber of possibilities, in no case is there sufficient evidence to establish definitely the cause of the accident.” tlte report states. SURVIVOR’S STORY Disaster to Rumanian Aeroplane London, January 11. Tragic details of the abrupt termination of the Rumanian flight to Australia wt?re related by a Shell Company officer who. interviewed at Frimu, said : “Dumitrescu was piloting the aeroplane from Vienna to Paris for an engine overhaul prior to departure for Australia. I was sitting at the back seat controls. When over the Rhine, we "struck a heavy cloud of fog about a thousand feet up. Suddenly near Buld in Baden through the mists loomed up a large obstacle, apparently! a mountain. Dumitrescu nosed the machine upwards, but the angle was too great and the aeroplane went into a tail spin. I attempted to regain control unsuccessfully, so jumpetfout and landed with the parachute. Dumitrescu crashed to death.”
