Indian Riot Aftermath
Calcutta, January 10.
The Kolahpur situation is worse. The 11 dead include three women. There are 35 injured. A portion of the Moslem population has fled to Ajra.
Police on Wednesday fired on a mob at Ichal-Karanji, a small .State dependant of Kolhapur. It is aleged that the mob attacked the police and attempted to prevent arrests. The shooting followed a trivial dispute between Mohammedans and Government officials over the proposed removal of sacred trees. The Mohammedans threatened an officer, whereupon the arrest of the leader was ordered. The mob refused to surrender their leader. Ine police fired blank cartridges,_ whereupon a mob of 300 attacked with stones, sickles and axes. The police then fired into the mob, which dispersed, leaving their dead and wounded.
