CRIME IN SYDNEY
After having suffered' three times through the activities of “smash and grab” burglars, a Sydney firm of jewellers has adopted the most modern means of protecting its costly stocks. It takes the form of an electric ray which shines across the windows, and immediately it is broken by the smashing of the glass or the thrust of a hand a shutter is released, dropping down before the burglar can make the .expected haul. Such protection as this is becoming increasingly necessary in Sydney, according .to the observations of Mr. H. Marshall, who has recently returned "from a visit there. He states that, as in many other large cities, crime is rampant, the problems of the police being increased by the fact that burglars are not hesitating to use firearms if they are in danger of being captured. Mr. Marshall added that the public was demanding heavier sentences for bagsnatchers, who, making use of motorcar's for quick escapes, were now operating on an increasingly large scale.
