Naming Taradale’s Main Street “GLOUCESTER” SUGGESTED Dominion Special Service. Napier, January 11. A suggestion that the principal thoroughfare in Taradale should be named Gloucester Street in honour of the recent visit of his Royal Higness, the Duke of Gloucester, was put forward at a meeting of the Taradale Town Board, when the question of officially naming the street came under discussion. It was pointed out that it had been known as Main Road ever since the original survey was made in the early sixties. The board was unanimous that the name suggested was most fitting for the main street. Bitumen-sealing of Roadway. The Taradale Town Board has accepted a tender for the bitumen-sealing of 32 chains of the Puketapu Road. The Public Works Department is to be asked to appoint a supervisor for the work. Popular Taradale Motor Camp. The motor camping ground at Otatara? Taradale, has been well patronised during the holiday period by visitors and local residents. Reporting to a meeting of the Taradale Town Board, the clerk, Mr. W. G. Jarvis, stated that the patronage given to the ground thoroughly warranted the attention that it had received from the board. Business Premises to be Closed. Several business houses in Dannevirke have decided to accede to the request of the retail section of the Dannerirke Chamber of Commerce to close at 8.15 p.m. to-morrow evening, on the occasion of the visit to the town of the band of his Majesty’s Grenadier Guards, which is to give a recital at the A. and P. Association’s Showgrounds.
Library Changes Quarters. It is apparent that the transfer of the Napier Public Library facilities from the Old Atheneum building in Browning Street to its new home on the first floor of the Market Reserve Block in Tennyson Street, has proved popular with the general public, as well as the library staff. The new location is more airy and the books more accessible.
Tour on a Tandem Bicycle. Two young men, Messrs. J. D. Barker and G. Busby, of Papatawa, have left for Rotorua on a machine seldom seen on the roads nowadays—a tandem bicycle. They intend camping en route, having taken a tent and cooking utensils.. They proceeded north with the intention of passing through Napier and Taupo. On the homeward journey they will visit National Park. The trip is expected to occupy some three weeks. Safeguarding Bathers. Sponsored by the Te Awa Swimming Club, and with a view to increasing the safety of bathers in the vicinity of Sale Street, Napier, a Life-Saving Patrol is to be formed. Practices are to be held at the head of Sale Street on prearranged evenings and afternoons, when the Te Awa Life-Saving team will be present to instruct and train the young swimmers who are desirous of assisting this movement. Town Board’s Request Refused. The Taradale Town Board recently approached the Post and Telegraph Department at Napier requesting that an extension of the Napier Exchange gas rate be made, to include Taradale and Greenmeadows. The board has now receive! advice that the request was forwarded to the Post and Telegraph Department head office, at Wellington, where the authorities, after some consideration, decided that they could not agree to the proposal. The members of the Hospital Board’s Association executive ou a recent visit to the Otaki Sanitorium commented favourably upon the excellence of the environment of the institution, as well as upon the institutional control. The sanitorium is an institution for the treatment of women tubercular patients of the North Island. It is controlled by the Palmerston North Hosp’tal Board, Dr. Francis being the medical superintendent and Dr. Short, of Wellington, the consultant.
