Maori Name for the Avon.
“There are few who know the Maori name for the river Avon,” remarked a member of the entertainment committee for the visit of his Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester to Christchurch, when arrangements for the river carnival and the Maoris’ part, in ir, were being discussed. ' No one else ventured a suggestion, and in response to questions the speaker gave the name —Te Oue Poto. Three of seven swimmers chosen to represent Auckland at. the forthcoming Dominion championships at Timaru are ex-pupils of the Vauxhall School, Devonport. This proud record was helped by Vauxhall’s policy of giving thorough instruction in swimming to all its pupils. Througjiout the mouth of February all the pupils go dally to the bench at Narrow Neck, and are taught to swim.
