GRAIN AND PRODUCE Canterbury Markets Quiet By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, January 1.1. The first weeks of January are necessarily quiet ones on the Canterbury grain and produce market, almost all attention being paid to possible yields. At present the market is normal in all sections with very slight business passing in fowl wheat and ryegrass. Merchants have inspected some new season’s crops of ryegrass, both Italian and Perennial. Merchants ideas of values are 1/6 to 1/9 a bushel for Italian, and 1/6 to 2/- a bushel for Perennial, the 2/- for heavy extra good quality samples only. The ryegass crop is good, and there should be ample for all requirements. No cocksfoot is offering yet. Last year was a poor season for cocksfoot, and it is certain that this season there will be an improvement. Compared with average years, however, this one will be fair only. There have been one or two lines o’.', white clover on the market, but no business reported. Prospects are for a good crop, and prices -will probably be below those of last season. In grain no business is passing except for fowl wheat, which the between seasons demand has stimulated, especially as there appears to be a possibility of a higher price for milling wheat. Prices are firmer with a quotation at 4/Lyttelton. and 3/11 to 3/111, Timarn. f.0.b.5.e.. for prompt. There is practically no forward business in potatoes. All factors affecting the market, principally weather and the uncertain Australian situation, are causing business to be conducted cautiously. Nominal values at the moment range from £2/5/- to £2/10/- a ton on trucks .for April-'May-Junc delivery. Chicago' Wheat Futures By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.
