Early Morning Disturbance

Sir, —I am au Auckland visitor to Wellington, and usually retire at a rather late hour. On my first morning here at an hour something before 5 a.m. I was rudely awakened by a crashing sound that at first conveyed the confused impression to my sleepy mind that your noble carillon had gone suddenly _ mad. and that al] the possible combination of discord had been let loose on the patient populace. I soon discovered, however, that the gentlemen appointed by the City Fathers to empty the garbage tins were at their daily work. Hearty shouts and terrific crashes as the huge tins apparently met in mid-air testified to the joyous enthusiasm with which the very necessary work was being carried out, and the merry din continued for what seemed to be a long while. Each morning since I have had the same experience. I will admit (and Auckland Cjty Council please note) that the people of Auckland are more or less used to facing showers of dust, tiny particles of garbage and torn paper at about 11 a.m., and that we reflect sadly as we brush ourselves down and remove some of the aforesaid particles from our eyes that there is ample room for improvement. Nevertheless, a little less noise in the very small hours at Wellington would be appreciated.—l am. etc.. AUCKLANDER. Auckland.
