BOWLS TOURNEY

Flay in Championship

Rinks

TWO GAMES COMPLETE

Large Entry of 164 Teams

By Telegraph—Press Association.

Auckland, January 11.

The tournament conducted by the New Zealand Bowling Association was continued to-day. Play was commenced in the section rounds of the full rink championship. One hundred and sixty-four teams entered, and two games of 25 heads were completed. Eight games will toe played in this division of the championship, two to-mor-row, two on Monday, and two on Tuesday. The full rink game is regarded as the major game of the sport. It is played by eight men, four each side, who use two bowls apiece. The holders of the championship, G. Dickson, F. Iledpath. H. F. Gibson, H. Wilson, of the Linwood club, Christchurch, defended their title. Playing conditions were tricky. The greens ran-'fast, and a gusty wind made aecurate drawing difficult. It was evident that many prominent drawing men occupying positions of leads in their respective teams were astray often in their drawing to the jack. Indeed, many skips acclaimed their satisfaction'with shots a yard away from the objective. Exponents Out of Form. There was much tension among many teams during play in the first game of the rinks championship. Many sound exponents were obviously out of form, and in many instances it took the whole of the first game before many players could settle down to their average standard of performance. As the day advanced , the character of the games improved. The change from playing three games of 21- heads with a timelimit to two games of 25 heads, permitting contestants to take all the time they wished, did not work out as well as had been anticipated. Some morning games did not finish until 1.30 p.m., while the second games were drawn out until 6.30 p.m. The contestants did not exhibit much appreciation of the new arrangement. There was much interest in the'first round between McGv f ‘, Wakefield, Beer and Engebretson, of Napier, and Oughton, Hill, Tongue and Loram. of ,-Rocky Nook. After a. splendid introduction to Auckland of the skip of the Napier team in the singles championship, it was expected that his team would be prominent also in the rinks championship. Napier scored six on the first head. However, at the fifth Itocky Nook begun to pile on the score. The Rocky Nook fink was a betterbalanced one and more even in their play than their opponents. A Close Match. One ot the closest and most interesting games of the morning was that between Fookes, of Carlton, and W. Thomas, of Wai re re. Both teams were evenly matched. Bremner, the champion skip -of two seasons ago, opened his attempt to win the championship this year with a.loss against Bartlett, of Awakino, much to everyone’s surprise. Huchinson’s Dunedin rink, which was considered to be an extremely strong one. met with defeat in his first game by Francis, of Balmoral. The score read 1-1-2 for Balmoral in the eighth head. The Dunedin team did not lead on the board-at any part of the game. Results are as follow:— SECTION A First round: Thomas (Wairere) 20 V. Fookes (Carlton) 19: Maher (Auckland) 27 v. Auckland, January 11. Players taking part in the most important event at the Dominion bowling tourney, Uj g rinks cliampionslii'p, hucl ft hot day’s play to-day, the weather being sultry, although a breeze was blowing. Play in the rinks will be continued to-morrow, Monday, and Tuesday, when the section rounds will be completed. Two games of 25 heads will be played each day. Post-section play will commence on the day following the conclusion of section play. Any team which wins six or mere games in its section will Qualify for the postsection rounds.

One hundred and sixty-four rinks entered, making in all 646 individual contestants. This number compare with the 98 teams last year, when tho tournament was held in Dunedin. The 164 teams have been divided into 16 sections, and are playing on the greens of the following clubs: Auckland, Carlton, Remuera, Epsom. Mount Eden, Ponsonby, Devonport, Mount Albert, Grey Lynn, Balmoral, Onehunga, Ellerslie, Hillsborough, Waitemata, Te Papapa, ami Hallyburton Johnstone.

A change has oeeu made from the usual method of conducting rink championships in Auckland, from three games of 21 heads each clay to two games of 25 heads. This change has been introduced to more or less give entrants a spell after their strenuous rounds in the singles and pairs, divisions, and to allow the visitors an opportunity to return to their hotels for their meal instead of participating in a hurried lunch in the pavilions. The post-section and final rounds will revert to 21-head games. The holders of the championship, G. Dickson, F. Redpath, H. F. Gibson, H. Wilson, of the Linwood club (Christchurch), are defending their title. Although Wellington had fewer rinks taking part than Taranaki or Otago, some strong teams had been entered. They were distributed as follows: Arthur, Marrls, Routlej' and Smith (Kelbnrn). at Hillsborough:

Wrigley, Josephson, Wellings and McWhannell (Hataitai), at Epsom; Gauntlet, Wells, Newson and Brackenridge (Lyall Bay), at Mount Eden ; and Brighting’s Hataitai rink was at Ellerslie. The Wellington rinks had a good morning, but three rinks only jtlst won by an odd point. They were: Brackenridge (Lyall Bay) against Bainbridge (Mount Eden) ; Brighting (Hataitai) against Parsons (Ponsonby) ; aiftl McWhannell (Hatjiitai), against Jenkin (Mount Albert). Smith (Kelburn) had a comfortable win over Taylor (Mount Eden), 21-14. In the second round this afternoon Smith (Kelburn) defeated Kent 21-16 and finished the day with two wins. McWhannell (Hataitai) beat Gardiner 20-18 and with two others in his section had two wins for the day. Brackenridge (Lyall Bay) was also successful in his second game, defeating Coburn, 25-21. Brigliting (Hataitai) defeated Roberts, 22-21.

Thus the Wellington rinks all won their second round games—a great performance.

Maxwell Walker (Auckland) had to fight hard all the way to score a twopoint win over Whitten (Claudelands), 23-21, at Carlton. On the same green there was a minor “family feud” when four Stormonts (Rocky Nook), father and three sons, were pitted against three Skogliind.s (father and two sons), of Stratford, the Taranaki team winning 24-18.
