POLICE FIRE ON MOB
Nine Mohammedans Killed Bombay, January 9. Nine Mohammedans were killed, including two women, and 20 injured when tlie police fired on a mob at IclialKaranji, a small State dependant of Kolhapur. It is alleged that tlie mob attacked the police and attempted to prevent, arrests. The shooting followed a trivial dispute between Mohammedans and Government officials over tlie proposed removal of sacred trees. The Mohammedans threatened an officer, whereon the arrest of the leader was ordered. The mob refused to surrender their leader. The police tired blank cartridges, whereupon a mol) of 300 attacked witli stones, sickles and axes. The police then fired into tlie mob, which dispersed, leaving their dead and wounded.
