Quist Defeated in Five-set Match TENNIS AT MELBOURNE (Received January 10. 11 p.m.) Melbourne, January 10. Hopman and Maier’s success was largely due to the adoption of the American service formation, cutting off Menzel’s crosscourt service returns. Maier standing on tlie same side as the server. Hughes (Britain) defeated Hopman and Maier, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. Women’s Singles.—Mrs. Hopman defeated Miss Walters, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Miss Lyle (Britain) defeated Miss Bickerton, 6-2, 8-6. Women’s Doubles. —Mesdames Molesworth and Westacott defeated Misses G. and D. Stevenson, 6-3, 6-3. Quarterfinal: Miss Round (Britain) and Miss Coyne, defeated Mrs. Malcolm (South Africa) and Miss Chitty, 6-2, 6-0. .Semifinal : Misses Lyle and Dearman (Britain) defeated Mesdames Molesworth and Westacott, 6-4, 6-4. SPORTING ACTION Forfeit Not Accepted Melbourne, January 10. An example of sportsmanship has been revealed in the tennis singles yesterday In the Turnbull-McGrath match. When the game was two sets all. McGrath, who was off colour, intended to forfeit, but was persuaded by Turnbull to have a rest, which he accepted unwillingly. When the match was resumed McGrath clinched it Had Turnbull accepted McGrath’s forfeit he would meet Perry in the semi-final Turnbull’s sportsmanship was one of tlie happiest features of the champion 4 ships.
