Three times during to-days proceedings in the trial of Hauptmann, alleged to have murdered the Lindbergh baby, Dr. Condon, who was called to the witness stand, identified Hauptmann as the man with whom he conducted ransom negotiations and -to whom lie paid 50,000 dollars ransom at the Bronx Cemetery. Dr. Condon also declared that he had also recognised Hauptmann on a New York street in August, 1934, hut was himself on a bus going the opposite way, and by the time he descended Hauptmann hazl disappeared. Mr. Reilly, who cross-examined the witness, was unable to shake him and was even the butt of witness’s pleasantries, which not only made the crowd laugh but the presiding Judge as well.
Dr. Condon described how he had pleaded with the kidnapper to be “honset and courageous,” and how, after receiving Hauptmann’s assurance that tlie baby was safe and would be returned, he handed over the ransom money.
