NEW COMET FOUND
Reported From Melbourne
A telegram announcing the discovery of a new comet was received yesterday by the Dominion Observatory from ' the Melbourne Observatory. The comet is a telescopic object but should be visible in moderate for instance, of apertures from three to eight inches. Generally several comets are discovered each year, but last year was unusual in that no comets were found in the twelve months. The comet was discovered on January 8 at 18 hours 28 minutes Greenwich mean time. Its right ascension was then 0 hours 59 minutes 4S seconds, and its declination 51 degrees 3 minutes south. Its daily motions are, in right ascension 16 seconds of time, increasing, and in declination moving 1 degree 43 minutes north. Its magnitude is 10 and it has a diffused appearance. Nothing is reported about Its tail.
The details given place the comet as not far away, ten degrees approximately, from the bright star Achernar, and almost exactly one degree north of the third magnitude star Beta Thphoenicis. That was its approximate position last night. It is moving almost exactly due north.
