SIR HENRY FOWLER

Visitor to Wellington A distinguished visitor to Wellington yesterday was Sir Henry Fowler, K.8.E., LL.D., D.Se., of Spondon Hail, Derby, England, one of Britain's foremost mechanical engineers, and, incidentally, the designer of the famous “Royal Scot” engine.

Sir Henry, who was born on July 29, 1870, was educated at Evesham, and at the Mason Science College, Birmingham. He underwent his training as an engineer at the Horwich works. Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company. He joined the Midland railway thirty-five years ago, and was chief mechanical engineer to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company from 1925 to 1930. He was president of the University of Birmingham Engineering Society from 1912 to 1914, and during the same period president of the Institution of Locomotive Engineers. Later, in 1920-21, he was elected president of the Institution of Automobile Engineers, and was, at the same time, president of the Institution of Locomotive Inspectors and Foremen, and president of the Engineering Section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1926 SirHenry was appointed president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and in 1932-33 he was president of the Institute of Metals.

Under the Ministry of Munition, in 1915 Sir Henry held the distinguished position of Director of Production, and in the following year was made -Superintendent of the Royal Aircraft Factory. In 1917 he was appointed Assist-ant-Director-General of Aircraft Production, and was a Lieutenant-Colonel of the Engineer and Railway Staff Corps. For papers read before the Institution of Civil Engineers, Sir Henry was awarded the Miller Prize, the Telford Premium, Telford and Watt Medals, and the Webb Prize. He was also a member of the Permanent Commission of the International Railway Congress.
