The tournament conducted by the New Zealand Bowling Association was continued to-day, when play was advanced in the pairs championship. LARGE NUMBER OF TIES
Play of Wellington Men
Dominion Special Service.
Auckland, January 10.
The weather was hot and sultry when the fifth round of the Dominion, pairs championship commenced at am early hour this morning. There was, however, a light breeze which freshened later. The only Wellington pair to enter the fifth round with four P’ins to its credit was Wellings and McWhannell (Hataitai), although several other pairs still had chances.
Adess and Tamblyn (St. Kilda) started the last game hopelessly out of the hunt with one win and three losses. They lost the fifth game, 21-23, and finished at the bottom of their section.
Orsborn and Ingram (Wellington) won their last game at West End, 31-14, and finished second, Harris (St. Johns) winning the section. Wrigley and Josephson (Hataitai), with two wins and two losses, failed to improve their position, and lost the last game, 19-20. Johnson and Johnson (Petone) finished in last place with four others. They won their last game, 24-17, but had only two wins.
Wellings and McWhannell (Hataitai), who have been playing great bowls, went under in the fifth game to Gregory and Gardiner (Dunedin), 11-16. As the Dunedin players were well down the section the Hataitai pair won the section outright. Gauntlet and Wells (Lyall Bay) lost their last game against their section winners, Bray and Vella (Onehunga), 25-10. The Lyall Bay pair lost every game.
Neilson and Gilbert (Karori) lost their last game, 20-19, and thus gave Duncan (Carlton) the section with four wins and one loss, the Carlton pair being in second place. Chapman and de Tourettes (Thorndon) finished last in their section with, only one win. They lost their last game by default.
Newson and Brackenridge (Lyall Bay) Jost again, 20-21, and were the last in their section with only one win. Kerr and Taylor (Island Bay) improved their position by winning today, and were third in their section. Hansen and Hale (Island Bay) were second in their section.
The keenness of the competition is indicated by the very large numbers of ties which occurred, necessitating a' play-off to decide the section winners. However, several of the outstanding pairs got safely through to post-section play, including Bartlett (Awakino), Currie (Timaru), Harris (Wanganui), Newman (Thames), McCarthy (Port Ahuriri), and Pilkington (Hamilton).
A unique result occurred in section M, where five pairs tied with three wins each, the remaining pair having *no wins. This has always been recognised as a theoretical possibility, but probably it would not happen more than once in 20 years, and the possibility is considered so remote that New Zealand tournament committees have never made provision for it in its draw. As it happened the other section on the same green was won outright by Wellings and McWhannell (Hataitai), who were in an impregnable position last night, regardless of what happened this morning, and they met the winner of these five ties. In several sections four pairs tied, a common occurrence every year.
