TRAIN DISASTER

Numerous Casualties In Collision In Russia

POLICE MAKE ARRESTS

(Received January 9, 7.45 p.m.)

Moscow, January S.

Twenty-three were killed, 56 seriously injured and 23 slightly injured when sleeping-car expresses fropi Leningrad to Tiflis (Georgia) and Leningrad to Moscow came into collision on the main line 140 miles south of Leningrad. The first train was compelled to slow down owing to a defect. The second train ignored the signals and crashed into the rear of the first train, telescoping three cars.

The Tiflis train took fire and the wind fanned the flames as the rescuers smashed the debris in attempting to release the imprisoned passengers. The whole train was burnt out.

A Berlin message states that it is reported from Moscow that the entire signalling system on the LeningradMoscow line is dilapidated. For many months signalmen’s requests for repairs have been ignored and therefore engine drivers did not heed the signals. Secret police arrested about a dozen railwaymen, including the stationmaster and two signalmen at Torbino. These arrests were for not attempting to stop the Tiflis express by hand signalling.
