LOW SCORING

England v. West Indies

FIRST CRICKET TEST Barbados, January 8. Rain delayed the start of the Eng-land-West Indies Test, and the wicket was tricky. Wyatt won the toss, and put West Indies in. Three surprise changes in. the West Indies team were made at the last minute. Farnes made the ball kick, and Headley alone made a stand before lunch, when the score was 31 for five wickets, Farnes having .taken four wickets for 15. Headley continued to be the backbone of the defence. He batted for two hours, and gave two chances. Generally, the English fielding was poor, and several catches were missed.

England also found the wicket not to their liking. Martindale, making the ball rise, dismissed Wyatt and Leyland in the same over. England had lost two wickets for 16 at tea. Hammond and Iddon alone were confident. Scores: —

The English women’s cricket tour of Australia, has so far been a splendid sporting financial success. The financial success is due to the provision to meet the whole of the expenses which the Englishwomen had made before their arrival, with the result that gate receipts represent a net profit. Approximately £BOO was taken at tlie gates at the two tests, and it is expected that tire third test at Melbourne will swell the total to £lOOO, which will be set aside to send an Australian team to England. MATCH AT CANBERRA Magpies as Barrackers (Received January 10, 12.20 a.m.) Canberra, January 9. The English women’s cricket team began a one-day match against a Canberra team to-day. Two magpies became the keenest barrackers for the local team, which batted. The birds warbled a merry time and, with each change of bowling, wandered from side to side, causing general amusement. Canberra, in their first innings, made 72, a thunderstorm then stopping play
