YESTERDAY’S WEATHER

$ Hot and Sunny at Wellington

In spite of the threat of a southerly change Wellington's weather yesterday was again hot and sunny. A steady breeze helped to keep conditions from becoming oppressive, but did not prevent a “shirt-sleeve” afternoon for city workers. All who were able to do so made the beaches and swimming baths their destination, and after office hours there was a generous exodus. Bathing was continued until dusk, when conditions were calm, cool, and generally pleasant. The official report of the day’s weather is as follows: It was fine, sunny and warm in Wellington. A moderate north-westerly wind prevailed, but changed to the south in the evening. The temperature at 4 p.m. was 77-2 degrees, and the maximum during the day 75.1. The conditions at Masterton were again hot, although a gusty northwesterly wind, .which reached gale force at times, tended to keep the temperature a little lower than has been the ease recently. A strong wind from the north-east lowered the temperature in Palmerston North. Conditions were otherwise typical of summer, with a strong sun and light sky. After a stormy morning and overnight showers the weather at Wanganui cleared in the afternoon, when there was brilliant sunshine with a strong south-west breeze. With a strong westerly wind, there was less heat at Waipukurau, the maximum temperature being 85 • degrees.

The weather was fine and sunny at Auckland, the temperature being cooled by a light southerly wind. The barometer was steady at 29.90 in. The weather was fine but overcast and threatening at Christchurch. There was one short, sharp shower in the morning. A light south-west wind was blowing. The barometer rose during the day anil registered 29.85 in. last evening.

A squally south-west wind and tine weather prevailed at. Dunedin, with considerable passing cloud and sunshine. The maximum temperature was G 3 degrees.
