Ruahine’s Maiden Trip

(From ‘"The Dominion,” January 8, 1010.)

This morning the New Zealand Shipping Company’s new twinscrew steamer Ruahine is due from Plymouth, via Teneriffc, Cape Town and Hobart. She has been specially built for the company’s trade between London and Wellington and ie on her maiden trip to Wellington.

A representative of the “Otago Daily Times.” who visited 'he scene of the Waikare wreck in the Moura, returned !•> rhe Bluff last night. He states that shortly after 10 p.m. on Wednesday the Waikare turned over to port and sank, per bow resting on the reef opposite Stop Island and her stern out of sight in deep water. As she heeled over before finally sink'ing. and partly disappeared, water was seen to be pouring from a great hole in her bottom, nearly amidships.

The Invercargill left Invercargill on Thursday for Dusky Sound. She has on board Mr. Duncan and a party from Gisborne who are to make investigations touching the old wreck at the Sound. It will be remembered that the wreck was pretty generally believed to be that of Captain Cook’s Endeavour, but this theory has been practically exploded by Mr. McNab, who places her as n Sydney sealer. The result of Mr. Duncan and party's search will be awaited with interest.
