NEW STAMP ISSUE

Marking Jubilee of King’s Accession A special series of postage stamps will be issued in New Zealand next year to mark the silver jubilee of the accession to the throne of their Majesties King George and Queen Mary. A design entered by Mr. J. Berry, “The Dominion” artist, has been accepted, and the new stamps will be issued in three denominations of halfpenny, penny and sixpence. The design, which is the same for the three denominations, incorporates distinctive New Zealand features In Maori carving and the Southern Cross, with a crown at the top left, and right hand corners. The left half of the stamp will carry a portrait of Queen Mary and the right one of the King. These suggestions are being sent to England for the approval of their Majesties. The department hopes to have the stamps on sale on Accession Day, May 6, and they will be on sale for approximately a month. During that period the ordinary stamps will be withdrawn from sale and only the special Issue will be available.
