SHIELD CRICKET

Auckland Team Selected MATCH WITH WELLINGTON By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, January 8. The Auckland cricket selectors have chosen the following to play against Wellington in the Plunket Shield match, at Auckland next week: — Vivian (captain), Mills, Whitelaw, Weir, Wallace, Sale, Townsend, McCoy, Cowie, Edmonds, Bush. Mr. A. W. Dunean, sole selector for the Wellington Cricket Association, is absent on holiday at present, and will not return until the end of the week. It is pretty certain that he will include E. McLeod, the Hutt Club left-hand batsman and glow spin bowler, in the team tp meet Auckland. McLeod, who represented New Zealand against the English team, captained by A. C. MacLaren in the first test match at Wellington in the 1922-23 season, has been batting in outstanding form this season. In the senior championship competition, he has scored 320 runs for Hutt in six innings, in three of which he has been not out. This gives him the phenomenal average of 106.66 runs per innings. In addition, he is a clever slow spin bowler, and an active fieldsman.

It will not be surprising if the sole selector also includes the ex-VVellington College colt, W. G. Raintoird, in the team to play Auckland. Rainbird scored a century in each innings for the Wellington Colts against the Auckland Colts in the Brabin Shield match at Auckland at Christmas time, and also hit up a century against the Auckland City and Suburban Colts on the same tour. Making a first appearance in the senior ranks at Kilbirnie on Saturday afternoon. Rainbird scored 48 for Wellington College Old Boys against Midland in convincing style. Mr. J. H. Phillips will manage the Wellington team, which will leave for Auckland on Wednesday.
