WELLINGTON MEETING

Handicaps For First Day

Handicaps for the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's slimmer meeting, to be held at Trentham on January 22, 24 and 26. have been declared by Mr. 11. Coyle as follow:—

RACING TAXATION

Manawatu Club’s Burden

Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, January 9. Despite the fact that the turnover on the totalizator at the recent Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting showed a reduction, increased Government taxation menus that the club is required to pay

more than was the case last year. The increased taxation is accounted for by the fact that the club received a rebate of only | per cent., instead of the 1 per cent, allowed last year. The amounts paid over for various forms of taxation in respect to the summer meetings for this and last year are as follow:—

WELLINGTON TROTS Trial and Probationer Handicaps RECENT FORM SUMMARISED (By "Overcheck.”) There is not a great deal of public form to assist one in determining the respective merits of the horses engaged m the Gracefield Trial Handicap and the Probationers’ Handicap. Generally speaking it is wise to give preference to horses that have given some recent public demonstration of their ability, and I give below a brief summary in respect of those that come within this category. Casino ran third at Greymouth recently, her time being 2.25 4-5 for one mile. Mystery Yet.—Third at Hororata over 1J miles. Time, 3.28 3-5. Second same meeting over 13 furlongs. Time, 3.50. Second Ashburton last month over 14 miles in 3.22 1-5. Orleigh Mills ran second to Shining Metal at Carterton on Boxing Day, her time for 1} miles being 2.55. To Mold created a surprise at Carterton, winning the Trial Handicap of 1} miles in 3.27 1-5 on a course which is a good deal slower than Ashburton, where Mystery Yet recorded his best performance. Edgar Wallace was third to Midshipmaid and Full Hand at New Brighton in October, recording 3.27. He won at Ashburton in December in 3 22 3-5, and was second at New Brighton later in the month, registering 3.24 1-5. Jean Parrish has raced three times this season for a third to Shining Metal and Orleigh Mills at Carterton, her time for the 10 furlongs being 2.54. Super Tax has had four outings so far. He was placed second to Te Mokj at Carterton when conceding 24 yards. Hie time was 3.25 4-5, a good effort for the course. (Late Sporting will be found on page 4.)
