Paraparaumu Beach Camp Site

Sir, —I have camped at many camp sites in New Zealand during the past few years, including the Paraparaumu beach site, and although I was delighted with the Paraparaumu beach I was sadly disappointed with the facilities provided for campers at the camp site. The sanitary arrangements are deplorable, in fact non-existent.

Most camp sites are conducted on up-to-date lines, but I must say the sanitary arrangements and other facilities provided at Paraparaumu beach are the worst I have yet had to contend with. The lavatories provided are an absolute disgrace, and it is up to the domain board to do something immediately to put matters right. Failing this, I suggest that the Health Department should be requested to make a close inspection of the site before the campers leave. There is no privacy for women campers (lavatories without doors), and both sexes refuse to use the out-of-date and totally inadequate conveniences.

Unless improvements are taken in hand by the domain board I consider it is time the camp site was closed up until the desired improvements can b? carried out. The chairman of the domain board should take a tour of the North Island and spend a night or two at some of the excellently conducted camp sites; he would then fully realise just how far Paraparaumu is behind the times. The sanitary arrangements at Paraparaumu beach site can only be described as disgusting, and not at all suitable for women campers. There is room for vast improvement in many ways, and it is to be hoped the domain board will take the question of improvements into consideration at an early date, so that the work can be completed before Easter. The present state of affairs should not be allowed to exist any longer.—l am, ete., REGULAR CAMPER. Hawke’s Bay, January 5.

[A member of the Paraparaumu Domain Board, Mr. M. Maclean, when invited to comment on the above letter, stated that the board had nothing to do with the camp, which was only a temporary one,]
