SUMMER SCHOOL

Methodist Bible Class Leaders GATHERING AT MARTON Dominion Special Service. Marton, January 8. Highly successful from every point of view was Hie Methodist Summer School, conducted for Bible Class leaders, at the 51aori Girls’ College, Alarton, from Wednesday, January 2. until yesterday morning. The Summer School, one of the three conducted annually in the Dominion, was largely attended by delegates from all over New Zealand, and as a result of au enthusiastic muster much educational and spiritual value was derived. A great deal of credit goes to the organiser, Mr. C. Burton, secretary of the Young Men’s Bible Class Movement, and to the chairman, Miss Lorna Hodder (Wellington). "Thou Shalt Love” was a subject taken by the study circles, and dealt with under four headings—(l) The Way of Jesus: (2) The Way of the World; (3) The Life of Love; (4) Through Faith to Freedom. The mornings were occupied by addresses and discussions- on three subjects of vital importance to the woriil to-day—(l) The Causes of War: (2) Defence and Pacifism; (3) The Will to Peace. The first and third were led by Mr. O. E. Burton, M.A. (a tutor at Wesley College, Paeratn), and the second by the Rev. H. W. Newell (Wellington).

Recreation, with an enjoyable picnic at Heaton Park on Saturday, took up tlie afternoons, and the evenings were' spent discussing the subject: “in the Bilde Class* Movement, do we (a) help members to know God: (b) develop in members the power to effect changes in society?” The Rev. H. ’Whitfield and L. Miller were the leaders. Saturday night was taken up with the reading of a play relative to tlie earlier discussions on peace and war. Sunday, the final full day of the school, commenced witli an open-air Communion service, in which sixty-four members participated. The service was led by tlie Rev. A. N Scotter, B.A (Palmerston North). In the evening the Methodist Church at. Marton was filled to capacity. A sermon on “Tlie Cross is in the Field.” was preached by Mr. 0. E. Burton. M.A.
