LAWN TENNIS

Manawatu Tournament UNPLEASANT CONDITIONS Dominion Special Service. ■ 1 Palmerston North, January 8. ; Although a heavy fall of rain caused a i of play until the afternoon, good progress was again made with the < Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s ] open championship and handicap tour- < nament to-day. The standard of tennis ; in many matches was high, and a promising indication of more bright play in ; the final rounds to-morrow. Playing s conditions to-day were far from pleasant, ; the courts being slow, and the wind made ' accurate judgment in the timing of high balls difficult. Charters is not playing up to form, and I in his mixed doubles match with Miss I Nicholls against Chisholm and Mrs. Ogier he was far from confident with his strok- ' ing. Similarly in his singles against S. i Hooper he conceded the first set to this i promising young player before he settled ] down to more steady play. ' s Chisholm’s forehand was the deciding , factor in the fourth round of the men’s - championship singles against J. C. Robertson. The latter led 4-2 in the second I set, but Chisholm contested every point, ■ and eventually won 7-5. 1 D. I.
