Wellington Market Quiet

PRICES GENERALLY FIRM A quiet but firm tone marked the reopening of the Wellington stock and share market yesterday after the Christmas vacation. Business was quiet, the only recorded transaction, being a sale of New Plymouth Gas. £5. paid, at £7. There, was a strong inquiry for Government loans. Buyers offered £lO9/10/- for 4 per cent, stock, 1955, but sellers asked £ll2/5/-. Banks were dull? Commercial of Australia .were wanted at 10/-, cum dividend, but sellers were silent. New South Wales were unchanged at £3l. Sellers were asking 49/6 for New Zealands. • Insurant shares were a fairly steady market. A.P.A.’s were wanted at 10/9, cum dividend. Nationals had buyers in at 21/4, but sellers held for 6d. better. New Zealands were quoted at 68/-, sellers 69/6. South British were very firm at 96/-. . New Zealand Refrigerating were firm at 20/3, and the 10/- paid, at par, sellers asking 21/- and 10/4 respectively. Wellington Woollens showed little change at £5/12/6. Westport Coals were firm at 20/6. New Zealand Breweries were in demand at 51/-, sellers holding for 53/-. Miscellaneous industrial and trading issues were generally firm. Woolworths (N.Z.) were wanted at £B. Mining shares were very dull. Waihis were bid for at 37/3, but sellers asked 39/6.
