OBITUARY
Sir Alfred Ewing
(Received January 8, 1.10 a.m.) London, January 7. The death has occurred of Sir Alfred Ewing.
Sir James Alfred Ewing, K.C.8., was president of the British 'Association in 1932. He was born nt Dundee in 1855, and studied engineering, holding professional positions at the Imperial University of Tokio, the University College of Dundee, and at Cambridge, where he was Rede Lecturer in 1904. From 1903 to 1916 he was Director of Naval Education. and from 1916 to 1929 lie was principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh. From 1924 to 1929 he was president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. For the greater part of the war he was in charge of the department of the Admiralty, dealing with enemy cypher. Earlier in his career he had been a member of the Explosives Committee and the Advance Research Board. He was awarded the Royal Medal for researches in magnetism in 1895, and the Albert Medal in 1929. From 1924 to 1938 he was chairman of (he Bridge Stress Committee.
