IMPROVEMENT IN WOOL PRICES
Better Tone at Second Wellington Sale KEEN COMPETITION: GOOD CLEARANCE Bradford and France Active: Germany Buying Strong and well-spread competition with a much brighter tone in the market were the main features of the second Wellington wool sale of the 1934-35 season, this auction al so.being t hei first of the New Year in the Dominion A total of 26,6121 bateswas ' catalogued, this probably being reduced to the round 26,(W bales by late withdrawals, the offering being well below the limit of 28000 bales fixed by the New Zealand Wool Committee. Oi a fullbench of buyers, Bradford was the mainstay of the market. France was a keen buyer of fine wools and Japan bought ree y. Germany was’also operating and the competition of Jer buyers gave firmness and a better tone to the market. Compared vvit. rates ruling at the December sale, prices of halfbreds advance! 4d to id., and for finer sorts up to a penny. Fine and medium crossbreds were from |d. to Id better, and coarse crossbreds from id to jd. better. Lambs wool and bellies, pieces and crutchings showed little change, prices being in sellers favour.
Generally, the wools offered yesterday were rather disappointing, the quality not being up to the usual showing at a January sale at Wellington. Many lots lacked growth and were wanting in style and lustre. Much of the wool, too, was inclined to be tender, this being due to the bad growing season. Walrarapa and Manawatu clips made up a large percentage of the offering, and there were also good supplies from Nelson and Marlborough.
Germany in the Market. The buyers’ bench, represented all sections of the trade. Bradford were the main operators, and strong support came from the Continent, notably from France, who was a keen competitor and heavy buyer of fine wools, lambs’ wool and bellies and pieces. Some good orders from Japan were filled. It was noticeable that Germany was in the market for crossbred hoggets and halfbred fleece, as well as for 'lambs, bellies and pieces, one buyer in particular being a keen competitor on many lines. Dominion and Australian mill buyers were also working freely on suitable lines, and there was some buying for Canada and the United States. ' The sale, in strong contrast with the December auction, was marked by. active competition, which frequently was very keen. Growers appeared better prepared to meet the market, and consequently there was a general good clearance, between SO and 90 per qent. of the total offering being sold. A Contrast in Prices. Yesterday’s sale afforded a marked contrast to the sensational auction at Wellington twelve, months ago. On that occasion the offerings was 31,465 bales, of which 31,413 bales were sold under the hammer, only 52 bales being passed in. The average price per bale was £2O/5/Bi, compared with £7/0/7, and the average per lb., 13.333 d., compared with 4.695 d. for the Wellington sale of January, 1933. The extraordinary variations in prices are shown by comparing some of the prices realised yesterday with those ruling twelve months ago, and those of January, 1933. The prices of a well-known

The top price realised at yesterday’s sale was 12}d. for four bales of A comeback ewe wool from the yehills clip. At the January sale last year a similar line from the same grower made 22d. His A comeback wethers yesterday made Hid.; compared with 21d. a year ago, and his pieces made 9}d., as against 18}d. A line of A halfbred from another grower made 12|d. yesterday, compared with 23d. a year, ago. The top price yesterday for lambs wool was 10Jd. for four bales,, marked K J.D., Pah Flat, a similar line making 163 d. last January. Another grower passed in 8 bales of lambs’ wool at 7jd. yesterday, whereas a year ago he received 18id. for a similar line.. The market will be tested again on Saturday, when 27,000 bales will be offered at Napier. THE RANGE OF PRICES Comparison With December Following is the official range of prices at yesterday’s auction, those of the December sale at Welllngtos being given for
THE EXPERTS’ VIEW
Reviews by the Selling Brokers
Comprehensive reviews of yesterday’s sale from the point of view of the selling brokers are given below, together with details of the realisations of many well-known clips:—
LEVIN AND CO.. LTD.
Levin and Co., Ltd., report:—A total b£ 20,400 bales was offered, our catalogue contributing 7035 bales. Taking the wool as a whole, the clip was disappointing and below the average standard of a January sale. Much of the wool was tender, particularly from the Wairarapa side, and the bulk lacked style and growth. The season had not given the results that were anticipated earlier. There was a good supply of halfbreds from Marlborough and Nelson, and we had one outstanding elip of half- . bred from the Wairarapa, consisting of J 20 bales, marked cross keys H/Hudson, the hoggets from which realised 12-1. and ewes lid. Buyers were present in good force, and bidding was keen throughout. Bradford buyers were operating freely. Japan was a free buyer, and particularly interested in anything of the Lincoln type, which sold comparatively well. Germany was in the market for crossbred hoggets and halfbred fleece, as well as bellies, pieces and necks. France was strong on halfbreds, and necks, bellies, pieces and lambs. Dominion mills were looking for merino, lambs and locks. Quite a considerable quantity of crossbred was bought for Canada, and some for U.S.A. The net result was some improvement in prices generally on December, except for bellies and pieces, which barely he;d their own. As compared with the December sale, there are the following changes to record:— Merinos, not sufficient to quote. Fine halfbreds, Id. advance. Medium halfbreds. id. to id. advance. Crossbreds, 48/50's, super, id. to id. advance; average. Id. advance; 46/48’s, super, id. to id. advance; average, id. to Id. advance; 44/46’s. super. DALGETY AND CO., LTD.
Dalgety and Co., Ltd . Wellington, report: The limit allowed for yesterdays eale was 28,000 bales, the total offering, after allowing for withdrawals before the auction, being 25,700 bales, out of which 21,950 bales were disposed of.
The general character of the crossbreds offered was disappointing, super style wools being very scarce. Many elms which in previous years opened up as supers this season lacked character, colour and density, and .n many instances carried duet. Hairy tip was also in evidence. Since the last Wellington sale the market has not been tested as regards the demand for crossbreds, as the southern sales catalogues are principally composed of medium to fine halfbreds. The selling season so far has been a difficult cne, and although prices for crossbreds are thoroughly disappointing yas compared with last year’s average it is now pleasing to be able to report that Bradford, the mainstay of North Island sales (who were practically out of the market during the December rounds) came >u solidly yesterday and bought freely. The Wellington offering was a fair test, as previous catalogues were of small compass. It was gratifying that competition was freer and pronounced from the start to the finish of the sale, with buying power on the benches to lift tae offerings at defined Unfits. A heavy weight of wool has still to be disposed of. Up tq December 31. 1934, about 140,000 hales had been sold by auction in November and December sales, whereas up '9 the same date this year only about 75,000 bules have been quitted. There are serious obstacles to negotiate before the law jf supply and demand will begin to function normally, and at the moment it certainly does not teem as if there is. or is likely to be, any shortage of the raw article in the near future. It is claimed that artificial fibres flourish only when wool is bringing high prices, yet two years ago when wool values were very low the biggest firm of layon manufacturers doubled their profits. This should be an indication to wool producers that artificial fibres are far from being a spent force. It was pleasing to sec English buyers again well in the market, and their competition at yesterday s sale was most valuable on all types of crossbreds. They lifted a heavy weight of the offering. Japan was not much in the limelight. Their purchases were small, probably on account of reduced limits. Still, ou certain wools their competition was helpful. France as usual was interested in halfbred fleece, and the best class of bellies and pieces, and bought freely, Belgium also operating on a larger scale. Local mills secured most of the good lines of merino and halfbred fleece, also being keen buyers of free lambs' wool and merino pieces. Canada gave solid support on the good spinning types of crossbreds. One German firm operated freely and purchased 1100 bales. Growers met the market well, and we disposed of 86 per cent, of our offering at auction. Since our last sale was held other auctions have taken place at Christchurch. Timaru and Dunedin, prices at the latter sale showing a hardening tendency. On comparing range of .prices, we make yesterday’s values well on a par with Dunedin. As compared with last Wellington sale, we quote: Merinos and halfbreds. firm and in sellers’ favour: super style hoggets (Romney), firm and in sellers’ favour; super Romney (46/4848/50, id. dearer: good top-making crossbreds, id. tf> id dearer; ordinary top-making crossbreds, par, at times in sellers’ favour; bellies nnd pieces (good), very firm at late rates. , Owing to the small offering of Jarnos wool at. last sale a reliable comparison cannot be given, but this class 01 wool ,commanded keen competition, especially loin of good length and free from seed. The depreciation as compared with last January is not pleasant to refer to, but Mill we give hereunder prices made for certain clips in January. 1934 and

Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Limited, report as follows:—We submitted a catalogue of 2757 bales and sold over 90 per cent, under the hammer. The quality of the wool offered was not up to the usual January standard, this applying in particular to many Wairarapa clips, which showed decided signs of the adverse seasonal conditions. Practically all hogget wools were tender, and in many instances showed discolouration. All the usual buyers were in attendance, and competition was keen and well sustained. Bradford was more in evidence than at previous sales of the current series, and really bore the brunt of the buying. Germany was operating sparingly, and France, as usual, was in the market for pieces and the finer fleece wools. Compared with the last Wellington sale, we consider prices were decidedly firmer, halfbreds showing an advance of Jd. to fd. per pound. Good top-making wools were up Jd. to jd., and average top-making wools were firm to id. advance. Coarse wools sold on a par with the last local sale. Bellies and pieces sold at par to id. advance. Crutchings were easier, except super lots, which were firmer. MURRAY, ROBERTS AND CO., LTD. Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltd., report: The second Wellington sale of the current season took place with a total offering of 26,612 bales of wool, our own catalogue consisting of 4802 bales, coming from the Wairarapa, Rangitikei, Manawatn, and Sounds districts. Generally speaking, the wools were of a rather disappointing character, and certainly not equal to the usual January showing, many of them lacking lustre and style, and more weak staple than was apparent in our December offering was in evidence in to-day’s catalogue. There was a vyy large attendance of buyers, and competition, which was free and animated throughout the sale, was much more general than at last month’s fixture. Germany was in the market to a certain extent, and this no doubt gave more firmness and a brighter tone to the sale. ■ Bradford was the main operating force, with Japan buying suitable lots, and France operating keenly in fine wools, pieces, bellies and lambs in competition with Australian and New Zealand mills for the latter, and on some lines of pieces competition of local mills was also evident.
Growers met the market fairly readily, and this, aided by the generally stronger tone of the eale, enabled a good clearance to be made, and we quitted 88 per cent, of our catalogue under the hammer. Compared with last sale, crossbred wools were from a farthing to a halfpenny higher; extra fine crossbreds and halfbreds a halfpenny and up to a pennybetter; pieces and bellies were fully firm in sellers’ favour, and lambs wool about par for the beet. lots, but the market showed some irregularity. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., report as follows :—A total catalogue of approximately 26,600 hales was submitted, ot which our quota was 3565 bales. There was a full and representative bench of 'buyers who competed keenly up to their limits for the various lots as they came under the hammer. The bidding was more general than at the Decomber sale, but Bradford was the mainstay of the market, while Germany, although not -being a heavy purchaser, was more in evidence than at the previous sale. Japan also was in the market for suitable lots, and France was a strong competitor for bellies and pieces. Dominion mills' representatives were not as keen at yesterday’s auction as at the previous sales, but this no doubt is accounted for by the wool not being suitable for their requirements. The wool did not open up as well as is expected at the January sale, most of it being ordinary top-making sorts, and practically the whole offering showed signs of the adverse seasonal conditions. Most of the hogget wool' was tender and in many instances a bad colour. Prices, as compared with the December sale, were decidedly firmer. Halfbreds were from a Jd. to id. dearer, good topmaking sorts were from a Jd. to Jd. dearer, ordinary topmaking sorts a jd. better. Bellies and pieces can be quoted par to a id. dearer. Lambs’ wool, if free from seed, was practically the same as December sale, but inferior and seedy is inclined to be easier. Crutchings also, except for the best sorts, were easier. Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Company, Ltd., reports as follows;—A total of approximately 26.600 bales was offered to a full bench of buyers representing overseas houses, Dominion mills, and a fair sprinkling of speculators. Bidding was keen and animated throughout, and we sold SO per cent, of our catalogue under the hammer. The sale, compared with December, can be considered as satisfactory, as there was no easing in prices so far as fleece wool was concerned.
The clip generally was not as attractive as in December, the bulk of the offering being ewe wool, which lacked style and quality, and the showing in the main could be termed a good Bradford selection. The super wools offered were keenly competed for, and were taken for Canada, America, and Japan consump-
tion. Hoggets were again iu good demand, and lines showing good quality made very satisfactory prices as compared with December sale. Pieces and bellies were par to a halfpenny cheaper, while lambs’ wool could be quoted par to jd. dearer. Locks were on a par. The demand for crutdhings eased considerably, and we quote these at a halfpenny to a penny cheaper. The Bradford operators were bidding very keenly, taking the bulk of the fleece wools, while pieces, bellies, lambs, and locks were taken by the local mills anil the Continent. Germany was buying a little more freely than in December, but as yet has not regained her buying strength of previous seasons. WAIRARAPA FARMERS’ COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION. The Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd., offered an attractive catalogue, comprising many of the best fine crossbred clips grown in the Wairarapa, Da’nnevirke and Manawatu districts, together with some from the Sounds county. The wool opened bright and light conditioned, but there were some lines showing signs of tenderness. From the outset bidding was extremely animated and well spread throughout all sections of the trade. There was some very welcome competition from Germany and the Continent. Japanese orders also were filled from our catalogue, as was a demand from Canada, the lots being sold to these interests, however, having to compete with a solid demand from Bradford. We sold the bulk of our catalogue at extremely satisfactory prices, having regard to the recent state of the market.
Compared with the December sale, the market may be approximately described as follows: —Fine crossbred, 48/50’s and 46/48’s, Jd. to id. higher; medium cro_ssbred, 44/46's, id. —and in some cases Id. —higher; coarse crossbred, .40/ 44’s, par to id. higher; hogget wool of 40’s to 46’s quality was up to id. higher. Lambs’ wool sold nt very satisfactory prices, as did also bellies and pieces,, the latter showing an advance of id. —and in some cases id. —per lb. An especial’ feature of our catalogue was the very keen competition for our binned lines.
