Owing to the large number of entries in the North Island croquet championships, now being played at Wanganui, only one final has been reached—the second section of the handicap singles, which was won by Mr. La Roche (Durie Hill). Four pairs of husbands and wives played in this section, and two pairs met in the semi-finals —Mr. and Mrs. La Roche and Mr. and Mrs. Ogier. Mrs. R. Watkins, of Hastings, has come back to her old form, and is playing sensational croquet. In two of the championship games her opponents did not score a point. Results of the second section of the handicap singles are as follow Semifinals: C. La Roche (Durie Hill) (5) beat Mrs. La Roche (9), 26-7; A. E. Ogier (Durie Hill) (5) won from Mrs. Ogier (8), 26-22. Final: C. La Roche won from A. 15. Ogier, 26-13. WAIRARAPA BOWLS New Year Tourney Mastertou, January 5. Although one or two very light rain showers fell, they did not have any material effect on the Masterton Bowling Club’s greens this afternoon, when the semi-final and final of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre’s annual New Year tournament were concluded. The green was in excellent playing order, and the weather was really quite good when the matches were played. The semi-final was between a Carterton rink comprising Harris, Stent, Masson, Barber (s.) and a Masterton club rink composed of Stewart, Jones, Hayne, Reid (s.). After playing a full 21 heads, the. match was won by the Carterton rink, 26-13, this rink then playing off for the final honours with a Masterton rink comprising Hunter, Bannister, Roberts, Taylor (s.). Play in the final game became very exciting at times, and the many visitors were treated to a good exhibition of I bowls, the match finally resulting in a win for the Carterton rink by 20-13, who thus take the honour of being the champion rink of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre’s 1935 New Year tournament.
