A Note From “The Hoe.” Cut Flower Secrets
It is disappointing to grow flowers end then And them wither quickly in the vases. The life of flowers may be prolonged considerably if the following hints are observed. One of the best “pick-me-ups” for flowers that are flagging badly after a-jour-ney, or being carried in hot weather, is aspirin. First place them in boil- . ing water, however, and leave them in a cool, dark spot until the water has cooled. Cut the softened stem away and place in fresh water,’-to which has been added two aspirin tablets, previously dissolved in an eggcupful of water. In an hours time the blossoms will be as fresh as if they were newly plucked. Enough permanganate of potash—Condy’s Fluid is just as good—to tinge the water a faint pink, is a stimulant that should always be used. One, small crystal of copperas (sulphate of iron) serves as well.
