East Harbour Tournament
MISS V. BURNS’S SINGLES
The East Harbour tennis tournament was almost completed during the weekend in perfect weather conditions on the Muritaii dub courts, Eastbourne. The semi-final match in the .men’s singles between Jarman and Purvis was mainly one of baseline driving on the part of both, and only an occasional visit to the net. Both kept a good length, but Purvis’s heavily topped drive gave Jarman a lot of trouble. The difficulty Jarman had in dealing with this shot, and Purvis’s excellent lobbing when Jarman came in, gave Purvis the victory. Purvis started brilliantly against Bedford in the first set of their match in the semi-final, while Bedford was not stroking at all accurately. However, he jumped into his stride in the next two sets, winning frequently from the net with, angled volleys and smashes. In the semi-final of the men’s doubles, had Jarman and Willis persisted with their lobbing tactics they might possibly have beaten Beeves and McCarthy. But they changed to driving, and in that they were outplayed by Reeves and McCarthy, whose volleying from the net was also sound. In the final the Bedford-Morrison combination was much too good for Reeves and McCarthy. They were superior in all departments, and more particularly in sharp angled volleys and in smashing Their lobbing, too, to drive McCarthy and Beeves from the net, was very accurate. Women’s Singles. There was very little between Miss M. Howe and Miss V. Burns in the semi-final of the women's singles. Miss Burns won because of her greater steadiness, and the fact that Miss Howe, when going for winners on the right ball, overhit the baseline by inches. Miss Burns was down love-3 in the third set. The steadiness of Miss Burns again prevailed when she beat Miss M. Macassey in the final. Her driving kept Miss Macassey from the net. or made it difficult for her to volley whenever she went Misses Sinclair and Bayfield won the women’s doubles, beating Misses V. Burns and A. Kean in the final, by virtue of their solid baseline game. Both hit hard only on the ball that was to their liking. They showed commendable patience.in keeping the rally going until they got the ball they could hit. - In the final the losers made the mistake of keeping Miss Burns at the net where she became more of a spectator than a participant. That Miss J. Burns would, bold her end up in the mixed doubles final was anticipated. because she had had previous experience in first-class tennis. But how Miss Burch, who was Bedford’s partner, would fare was a problem. As it was Bedford could scarcely have found a more steady partner. She never left the backline, but she lobbed and drove in a way that allowed Bedford to take the net with complete confidence. In the hardest exchanges she was never bustled, and she many times made openings for her partner to make winners from. At times Bedford rose to great heights of volleying and smashing. Because he had a roving commission aj; the net he frequently outplaced the’ opposition. But that brilliance would have been of no avail had Miss Burch not been so reliable. The final games of the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association’s annual tournament were played to-day before a large and enthusiastic gallery. Sonic remarkably good tennis was seen, particularly in the nien’s championship doubles, when after hardfought semi-finals, the final, won by D. Earle (Wanganui) and J. Charters (Wellington) from Cox and Udy, of Wanganui (last vear’s champions), ran to five sets. In the final of the men's championship doubles, each pair fought Its way point bj’ point—and at the end of the fourth sei were two all. The eighth game in the fifth set saw them four all, and Earle's brilliant play made the next a love game. Charters finished the next game with a well-placed drive, which Udy just failed to touch. Earle and Charters adopted lobbing and volleying tactics against the net play of Cox and Udy. Cross drives and heavy smashing were a feature. Miss Nicholls, of Wellington, had no trouble to win the women's championship singles, and with Mrs. Thomson (a former doubles New Zealand champion) to win the women’s doubles. Rumania aid Yugoslavia have all adopted, the Dunk p ball for their Davis Cup matches; Spun has adopted Dunlop for the ipialilviiig round, and for the Davis Cup match India v. Switzerland the Dunlop ba'l was again selected. Finally, Dunlop tennis balls were used in both semi-finals for the 1934 Davis Cup, and in three out of four second round matches in the European zone. Where quality counts, you will always find Dunlop rackets and Dunlop balls.—Advt.
