Wanganui Tournament
SINGLES FINAL REACHED Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, January 4. Fine weather favoured the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association’s championship tournament to-day, and play continued until dark. Miss D. Nicholls, Wellington, came comfortably through the women’s championship singles, and will play in the final with Miss Purcell tomorrow. Charters and Cox provided some spectacular tennis in their semi-final of the men’s championship singles. Hie final of this event, between Charters and Coombe, will also be played to-morrow. Results are as follow : —■ MEN’S SINGLES. Third round: Ferkins beat McFarlane, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3; McCarthy beat Dine, 6-4, 6-; Lampe beat Strombon, 6-4, 6-3; Charters beat Tippens, 6-0, 6-4; Dennis won from Robertson by default; Cox beat Carver, 6-1. 6-0. „ Fourth round: Coombe beat Fortius, 6-3, 6-3; Lampe beat McCarthy, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1; Charters beat Dennis, 7-5, *-6, 0-1; Cox beat Pearce, 0-1, 0-1. „„ n a Semi-finals: Charters beat Cox, 6—, --O. 6-2; Coombe beat Lampe, 6-1, 6-3. SOUTH ISLAND TITLES Singles Championship to Angas By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, January 4. The South Island tennis championships concluded to-day. Despite rain overnight the courts played well. The final of the men’s singles provided good tenpis, though the scores might indicate an easy win for Angas. Miss Rudkin proved too strong for Miss Sullivan, running out an easy winner. Experience played a big part in Miss Rudkin’s win. Results of championship matches are as follow: — Men’s singles: C. Angas (Christchurch) beat W. Renton (Timaru),’6-2, 6-2.
Men’s doubles: C. Angas and W. Robertson (Timaru) beat 11. Dymond (Christchurch) and W. Renton, 6-4, 6-2. Women’s singles: Miss D. Rudkin (Christchurch) beat Miss N. Sullivan (Timaru). 6-0, 6-3. Women’s doubles : Mrs. Barker (Rangiora) and Mrs. Hanan (Southland) beat Misses D. Smythe and N. Sullivan (Timaru), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
