YOUNG WOMAN KILLED
« Motor-cycle Skids Beneath Car on Wet Bitumen ACCIDENT NEAR LEVIN Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, January 4. As a result of the motor-cycle on which she was pillion riding skidding on wet bitumen and going underneath a motor-car, about a mile north of Levin, this morning, Miss Martha McFarland, aged 22 years, of Christchurch, was brought to Palmerston North hospital, where she died this afternoon. The motor-cycle was ridden by Raymond Richards, aged 22 years, also of Christchurch, -who was brought to hospital suffering from concussion. His condition is satisfactory. Miss McFarland received a fractured left leg, a broken collar-bone, and head injuries. The accident occurred shortly after 9 o’clock where the Kawiu road joins the main Levin-Foxton highway. The motor-cycle was proceeding south and skidded on the wet bitumen surface underneath the front portion of the car, driven by Mr. W. Bull, of Devin, which was going toward Palmerston North. Rain was falling at the time. The injured people received medical treatment at a private hospital and were brought to Palmerston North by ambulance.
The bitumen near where the accident occurred is usually slippery during rain and is regarded as dangerous by motorists. This corner has been responsible for two accidents within the last week. The car this morning, was not badly damaged, but the cycle was almost a complete wreck.
