MARJORIE’S BIRTHDAY

“Marj., wake up! It is your birthday!” yelled Bob. Bob was Marjory’s brother, who had been at boarding school for a year, and had arrived home last week for his Christmas holi days.

Marjory was' soon out of bed and down in the breakfast room. There on the table beside her plate were, dozens cf parcels, all shapes and sizes. There was a paint box from her friend Sadie, a box of chocolates from Kitty, her sister, and ever so many more lovely things. What puzzled Marjory more than anything was a letter from Dan. the cowboy. It said plainly enough, ‘‘Meet me at the mill at half-past one. Witn best wishes from Dan.”

“But, Bob, what will he want me for?” asked Marjory. “How do 1 know, stupid? Go and see for yourself.” Bob growled. After dinner was over Marjory went and waited at the mill. In a few minutes Dan was there, leading a dear little white pony. ■ “Oh, Dan, please may I stroke it?” Marjory asked eagerly. “Of course, Marj., it’s for you.” “Oh! Dan, you are a dear. But is i: really for me?” she asked, “or are you only playing one of your jokes?” “No, really, it is for you.” “Oh, how splendid, Dan, Dp you like Snowy?” Dan asked smilingly. “Rather,” said Marjory. “Who wouldn’t?”

So Marjory’s birthday was complete. She bad got what she had been longing for more than anything else in the . world.—By “New Zealand Lass,” Waipawa,
