Ngaio Paddling Pool

Sir, —I should like to draw attention to what in my opinion is a decidedly insanitary condition of affairs here in Ngaio, especially on these hot summer days. Just the other side of my back boundary fence is a small paddling put. for children. It is often, particularly on hot days, much patronised by little boys and girls, some of whom spend hours splashing in the cooling water. ■Well, sir, to begin with, the pool, is far too small for. the number attending it on sultry days. It should have been at least twice the size it is. I contend it cannot be healthy for young, children to be breathing continuously into . each other’s faces under crowded conditions. Occasionally one or two doge join the crowd and, knowing what dogs are, this cannot be sanitary. The pool too is often very dirty. Another condition ie that there should always be some responsible woman in attendance. Often there is. but also very often for hours at a time there is not. And, again, a is imperative. Whatever may be said, it ;s not the beet thing conceivable for young children of all ages up to 10 or 12, and of both sexes, to be dressing and undressing without any cover, and together. Personally, I am unaffected, as I have no children or grandchildren visiting the paddling pool. But as conditions arc now. if I had, and they proposed doing so, I should certainly prohibit them. — I am, etc., A. H. GIBSON. Ngaio, January 4.
