A five-roomed house and its. contents at 53 Wakefield Street, Lower Hutt, were totally destroyed by fire about 2 o’clock yesterday morning. The occupier, Mrs. Eva Kiernan, was away on holiday at the time. No insurances are yet available.
The theory that the sailing ship affords the best training for apprentices in the mercantile marine has been officially exploded by the manning committee of the British Shipping Federation, which considers that the deep-sea sailing ship has disappeared. Her memory has been surrounded by a glamour of romance which has been the inspiration of a good deal of sentimental but not practical talk on this subject. The committee has therefore decided not to recommend any scheme for providing for sailing ship training.
