CARDINAL CRITICAL
Attitude of Government
EDUCATION IN AUSTRALIA (Received January 3. 8.15 p.m.) Sydney, January 2. •'The attitude of the Australian Government to Roman Catholics in the matter of education is deplorable,” said Cardinal Slacrory, who visited Australia as Papal Legate to the Eucharistic Congress, prior to his departure for New Zealand by the Niagara. ‘‘lt is infinitely worse than the attitude of the Protestant Government of Northern Ireland to Catholic schools and infinitely worse than the attitude of the Catholic Government of the Irish Free State to Protestant schools. “Australian Catholies pay a share bf the taxes required to maintain public schools and then have to pay heavily for the maintenance of their own nonsubsidised schools.”
