Accident at Sea
(From “The Dominion,” January 3, 1910.) With flags at half-mast, the cargo steamer Anglo-Saxon, which sailed for London direct at 5 o’clock on Friday evening, returned to port at 8 a.m. ou Saturday, to report the death of the chief engineer, Mr. Francis Lawrence, a man of” 38 years of age, who leaves a wife and child at Sunderland, England. It appears that when the steamer was proceeding at full speed off Cape Palliser a loud explosion occurred in the engineroom, which naturally startled all on board. When the steam had been shut off and it was possible to get to the spot where the explosion had occurred, it was found that the evaporator had burst and its shattered remains had been hurled about the engine-room. Underneath several pieces of cast-iron and pipes that had been wrenched from their holdings, was found the chief engineer, evidently badly hurt, and, in fact, just breathing his last -‘ . , *
