“Night Life of the Gods”
J>IDER HAGGARD'S most entertaining creation was a woman so beautiful that she dazzled the eyes of man but she was-some two thousand years old. The idea was that the older she grew in years, the more-beautiful and desirable she became. Thorne Smith used this idea in his “Night Life.of the Gods” with the result that he created one of the most laughable and delightful characters in fiction. This character is called “Meg” and while she is bewitchingly beautiful she is far from possessing the queenly characteristics of Haggard's famous beauty. The role of “Meg" Is played by Florine McKinney, while Alan Mowbray plays the part of Hunter Hawke, the young scientist who discovers a powerful ray that will turn people to stone . . .or that will turn stone statues into human beings. Tlie supporting cast is large, including a number of well-known players who portray gods and godesses who have been converted from statues to human beings. “Mystery of Edwin Drood” A NEW set lias just recently been laid out at Universal City and will be one of the costliest and most extensive ever bulit there. In limes gone by, Universal built a tinge set for "Tlie Hunchback of Notre Dame.” and another one for “All Quiet on the Western Front,” the new set is being built for "The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” which will go into production shortly with a cast including Claude Rains, Douglass Montgomery, Heather Angel, Francis L. Sullivan, Valerie Hobson and David Manners. The production will be directed by Stuart Walker. Gladys Unger, who adapted Universal’s other Dickens story, “Great Expectations,” will also adapt “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.”
