Auckland, January 3. ’there was a good tone at the opening sale of the year at Westfield to-day. About 750 cattle were offered, with few of outstanding quality. Choice and prime steers remained firm at values ruling at the Christmas sale, but inferior sorts were bard to quit. Most of the cows and heifers offered were below standard and bidding was dull, with a general easing in values. Extra choice ox made 23/- a 1001 b.; choice aud prime ox, 20/- to 22/-; secondary and plain, 16/- to 19/-; prime young cow and heifer beef, 18/. to 22/-; ordinary cow beef, 10/- to 17/-. Extra heavy prime steers made £S/7/6 to £9; heavy prime, £7/15/- to £B/5/-; lighter prime, £7 to £7/12/6; light prime, £6 to £6/15/-; small and unfinished, £3/15/to £5/5/-; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £5/5/- to £6/5/-; heavy prime, £4/2/6 to £5/2/6; lighter prime, £3 to £4 ; other killable cows, £l/5/- to £2/17/6. There was a full yarding of calves, with a shortage of heavy runners. Competition was fairly keen, and good quality offerings realised values on a par with those at the last sale, while rougher sorts were a shade easier. Runners, 35/- to 75/-; vealers, 16/- to 73/-. The sheep yarded were well up to average numbers, with a fair standard ot quality. Competition was brisk for all prime sheep and values were firm at late rates for wethers, with a stronger tendency lor ewes. Lambs were plentiful aud although the demand was quite good, pride levels receded to those ruling before the Christmas sale. Wethers, prime, 22/6 to 27/3; unfinished, 18/- to 22/3; ewes, prime, 12/6 to IS/6; unfinished, 2/9 to 12/3; hoggets, prime, 20/- to 23/6; unfinished, 15/- to 19/-; lambs, pnme, 16/to 23/6; unfinished, 10/- to 15/-. The sale of a good yarding of pigs was not affected by recent export restrictions. Bidding was keen throughout, espeeifflly for heavy prime baconers, and prices tor tltese were on a par with those at the last sale, while porkers tended to be slightly easier. The demand for stores was light, with lower prices. Baconers realised per lb. SRI. to 5Jd.; porkers, 5-jd. Jo Gd.; baconers, 52/- to 74/-; porkers, 33/- to 49/-; large stores, 20/- to 30/-.

Values at Johnsonville

Au average yarding of cattle aud a small yarding of sheep were forward at the Johnsonville stock sale held yesterday by 'Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd.. and Abraham and Williams Ltd. Bullocks and cows met a keen sale, prices showing, an advance of up to 5/- per head on late prices. Vealers met a keen demand at late rates. There was a dull sale for wethers, there being little demand, with prices at par. A .small yarding of ewes met a keen sale prices showing a rise of up to 1/- per bead. Lambs were dull of sale, prices being slightly above freezing schedule.
