London, January 2.
“The Times.” editorially reviewing trade and economic prospects, emphasises (hat countries linked with sterling, including the Dominions, showed the most pronounced revival in 1934 and should continue to progress. America is apparently prepared for an advance.
The European outlook is less certain. Germany’s self-sufficient policy does not promise greatly to assist international trade, while the gold bloc counties are not encouraging. Italy and Holland had difficulty in maintaining an equilibrium, and French industry declined. If President Roosevelt abandons currency experiments and succeeds in raising prices and reviving indnstry the effect on gold currencies, to which the dollar is linked, may enormously improve world-wide tfade, but it is increasingly clear that a worldwide international currency is essential to complete recovery. Meanwhile British people can be thankful for a measure of revival and face the future confidently.
