“NEW DEAL” IN ENGLAND
4 Lloyd George to Outline Proposals London, January 1. Mr. Lloyd George outlines his “New Deal” at a public meeting in his constituency on January 17. A message published on December 16 stated that the “Daily Herald” said that Mr. Lloyd George, as a free and independent citizen, -tied to no party,’ would launch a public campaign early in the New Year to convert the public to the imperative need of national recon-’ struction, with the slogan, "Get something done.” His scheme, which would include sweeping proposals for replanning in Britain, was the result of months of preparation at his country house, where he held consultations with a group of economists, business men, and financiers. Mr. Lloyd George said he would appeal to the mass of silent, non-party voters who are ready to swing over to a policy of active and resolute reconstruction. "National control of the Bank of England as the key to economic recovery and reconstruction will be the foremost point in the programme.” he said. “The bank must be a real State bank instead of a close corporation." He added that there was something desperately wrong with a system that could not adequately feed, clothe and employ a large proportion of its workers. “I am going to spend the last years of my life in trying to alter that,” he concluded.
