NAVAL PROMOTION
Lt.-Commander Nichols to Be Commander
Dominion Special Service. Auckland, January 2.
The promotion of Lieutenant-Com-mander R. F. Nichols of H.M.S. Dunedin to Commander is announced hr the half-yearly list of promotions published by the Admiralty at the New Year. Commander Nichols has been on
the New Zealand station since May 15, 1933, his appointment being as squadron navigating officer and staff-officer (operations) to Rear-Admiral F. Burges Watson, Commodore Commanding the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy. Before coming to New Zealand Commander Nichols was in H.M.S. Danae on the West Indies fetation. It is unusual for a cruiser of the size of the Dunedin to have two officers of commander's rank, and, as a result of his
promotion, it is possible that Commander Nichols may have to return to England before the termination of his appointment in the New Zealand Division.
