(Received January 1, 7 p.m.) Vancouver, December 31. A message from Berkeley (California) states that a strong earthquake, one of the most serious recorded, occurred on Monday, Professor Perry Byerly, University of California seismologist, said that it must have caused great damage unless the shock was centred at sea. Various sections of California reported a shock lasting 'two minutes.
