FERSEN’S CUP
Stratford Opening Day STEADY RAIN Another Win For Lucidus Dominion Special Sfrvice. Stratford, January 1. After many weeks of dry weather rain set in at Stratford two hours before the start of tlie racing, and it rained steadily all day. Considering these conditions the attendance was remarkably good, and betting kept up well. The totalisator investments were £14.376/10/-, compared with £16.000/10/- last year. Mr, I), J, Guiney officiated as starter, and acquitted himself well. Easy Hurdles Win. Tareha was a good favourite for the Oliura Hurdles. Gowanlea was the early leader, but St. Ames went to the front at the end of half a mile, and passing the stewards’ stand had Gowanlea, Ytlian, Tareha, and Revision following. St. Ames was still in command when he fell at the five-furlong post. Y’tban then took charge, and ran on to win very easily from Revision. Tareha was a fair third, then came Richfield and Silver Division. The winner. Ythan, has now won on each of his two starts over hurdles, and is a promising sort. Revision finished well after jumping badly. Tareha also made a couple of poor jumps taht cost him much ground. Favourite Wins. Royal Dance was a pronounced favourite for the Trial Stakes. Reipar was first to become prominent, and over most of the journev was attended by Royal Dance, Zionist, apd Wharaurnngi. At the straight entrance Reipar was clear, but Royal Dance finished slightly better to beat him by three-parts of a elngth. Zionist hung on well to beat Pnnloff for third, and Wliaraurangi did best of the others. The winner had previously shown promising form, and was too well seasoned for Reipar. Panloff may do better to-mor-row. Condition Tells. Of tlie seven starters for the Tarikl Hack, St. Clara was the elect of backers, but Taliurangi was almost as well supported. Ruaform began very smartly, and led out of the straight from Prince Reno, Sunny Downs, and Gayfire. The last-named ran up to follow Ruaform into the straight, with Taliurangi most promising of the others. With a furlong to go Tahurangi took charge, but Korero immediately challenged and in a close finish Korero beat Tahurangi by a head, with Ruaform a fair third just in front of Gayfire. The well-seasoned condition of Korero just won for him, and in addition Ridg; way rode him a perfect race. Tahurangi again ran a fine race. Sunny Downs was a great disappointment. Contest for the Cup.
Aga Khan at a good price was favourite for the Stratford Cup, while Bugle Call and Davistock received strong support. Silk Sox went out as pacemaker, and over the first half of the race was closely attended by Nigbtguard, with Aga Khan, Fersen and Bugle Cali well placed. Racing into the straight Silk Sox was still going well in front, but once in line for the judge Fersen. Bugle Call _ and Davistock nil challenged. Hard ridden. Fersen ran on a little better than hie opponents to bent Silk Sox narrowly, with Bugle Call and Davistock close up. Fersen improved greatly as the result of last week's racing and ran on courageously to-day. Silk Sox lias been very sore, but on the easy track to-day ran a solid race. Bugle Call and Davlstock both went good races, but after getting a splendid run to the straight Aga Khan weakened. Surprise Favourite. After Freisland’s excellent form at New Plymouth it came as a surprise to find Royal Dance better supported for the Eltham Hack Handicap. Royal Dance led Freisland and Tutor up
the back, but racing to the straight Freisland took the lead, and stalling off a late run from Tutor, Freisland won comfortably, while Tutor beat Onewhetu by a narrow margin. Royal Dance was a fair fourth.
The winner impressed at Taranaki last week, and to-day’s form was even better. ' Lucidus Again. Lucidus was a good favourite for the Midhirst Handicap. He soon got to the front, and over most of the journey was followed by Dingano and Merry Way. Over the final stages Merry Way and Diagano made efforts to overhaul Lucidus, but had no chance, Lucidus beating Merry ..Way by two lengths and a half, with Diagano and Miladi close up in third and fourth places. The winner has improved with recent racing, and displayed his best form today. Great Finishing Run. A,s at the recent meeting at New Plymouth, Fast Acre began very smartly in the Juvenile Handicap, and soon opened up a four lengths lead over Silver Wings and Collodion. At the straight entrance Fast Acre was still clear, but Collodion immediately unwound a great run to win very easily from Fast Acre, with Lowen* berg a fair third, and Chikara next. Collodion showed marked improvement on last week’s form. He wns more patiently ridden to-day. Lowenberg was slow to begin. Finished Solidly. Lia Fail and Chief Marionette divided favouritism for the Railway Hack. Lia Fail began smartly and up the back straight had as his nearest attendants Princess Star and Harvest Moon. As they raced into the straight Lia Fail still held a useful lead, but she was called on to do her best to "keep off Chief Marionette, while Harvest Moon and Princess Star were close up. The winner is a solid mare, but all the same Chief Marionette might have beaten her had she had another race. Results in Detail By Telegraph—Press Association. OHURA HURDLES, of £l2O.
