TO-DAY’S NATURE NOTE
Dogs’ Sympathy
When Crossing a river with two dogs, one of which was used ,to water and the other not, I saw an act which shows definitely that dogs think very clearly. Jock and Scott entered the water together close behind the. horses. When we arrived on the other ba'nk I saw Jock emerging well downstream. He had, as was his custom, swam with the current and gradually worked his way across. Scott, on the other hand, had tried .to keep with us and, when I saw him, he was heading upstream, battling desperately and emitting the most pitiful yelps. Before T could move downstream to entourage him to turn, Jock raced past me, entered the water well upstream, and, when he reached scott, he pushed nt his head until he had him pointing downstream. Then, with his body, Jock gradually worked the almost exhausted Scott to the bank.— A.M.S.
